Who is Joan Baez?

BIOGRAPHY

Joan Baez — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Joan Baez was born on January 9, 1941, in Staten Island, New York City. Her father, Albert Baez, a physicist, moved the family to Baghdad when she was 10, then to Palo Alto, California. In 1956, she bought her first guitar and heard Martin Luther King Jr. speak on nonviolence. She graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1958 and briefly attended Boston University.

Career

In 1960, Bob Gibson invited Baez to perform at the Newport Folk Festival. That performance led to a recording contract with Vanguard. Her debut album, Joan Baez 1960, became a commercial success. In 1961, she met Bob Dylan and released a second successful album. She performed at the 1963 March on Washington and joined anti-war protests, spending time in jail in 1967. Two 1971 films — Sacco & Vanzetti and Celebration at Big Sur — featured her music.

Personal life

Baez married anti-war activist David Harris in 1968; their son Gabriel Harris was born in 1969 while Harris served a prison sentence for draft resistance. The couple divorced in 1974. She had a brief romantic relationship with Bob Dylan in the 1960s; they reportedly have not spoken since 1984. She lived with her mother in Woodside, California.

Legacy

Baez has influenced both music and activism. She inspired singer-songwriters such as Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell. In 2017, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted her. She received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Baez is remembered for her clear soprano voice and her commitment to civil rights and peace.

  • You Don’t Get to Choose How You’re Going to Die, or When. You Can Only Decide How You’re Going to Live. Now.

  • It Seems to Me That Those Songs That Have Been Any Good, I Have Nothing Much to Do with the Writing of Them. the Words Have Just Crawled Down My Sleeve and Come Out on the Page.

  • On Truth: Hypothetical Questions Get Hypothetical Answers.

  • The Fact Is I Can’t Sing Most of These Early Folk Ballads Any More, Because I’ve Lost That High Register. When I Do Sing Them I Have to Take Them Down a Few Semitones. I’m Much More Comfortable Singing Songs by Steve Earle or Natalie Merchant or Ryan Adams, Where I’m in a Different Zone. My Voice Is Much Lower These Days, and I Prefer It. There’s Also a Lot Less Vibrato, Because the Ends of the Vocal Cords Start to Calcify. You Do Hear Some People My Age Who Shouldn’t Still Be Singing, Where the Vibrato Is Very Wide and Out of Control and Not Very Attractive. I Try to Avoid That!

  • The Era in Which I Came on the Scene Was a Ten Year Period of Exceptional Talent. I Mean, Nobody Could Top Dylan; They’ve Been Trying for Years. Nobody Can Really Top John Lennon. so What What We’re Looking for What People in General Are Looking for and Longing for Are the Universal Songs That Bring Us Together, and That Are of Really High Quality. but Those Are Hard to Find. I Know That the Occupy Movement Was Looking for the Right Songs and They Ended up Singing ‘We Shall Overcome’ and ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ Because the Songs That the Group Was Looking for Didn’t Exist.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
