Growing up in the streets of Amsterdam, Johan Cruijff developed a remarkable soccer talent that would change the game. His formal education was limited to Sunday school, but his tactical mind earned him the nickname Pythagoras in boots. By age 10, he had joined Ajax’s youth academy, where his dribbling and vision set him apart from his peers.

In 1964, Cruijff made his debut for Ajax at age 17. By 1971, he led Ajax to their first European Cup victory, defeating Panathinaikos. He won two more European Cups in 1972 and 1973, scoring a famous goal in the 1972 final. In 1973, he transferred to Barcelona for a record fee of 6 million guilders, instantly becoming a hero for Catalonia. His playing style became known as Total Football, which he showcased for the Netherlands in the 1974 World Cup, though they lost in the final to West Germany. After stints in the US with the Washington Diplomats and briefly with Feyenoord, he retired as a player. As a coach, he led Ajax to the 1987 European Cup Winners’ Cup and Barcelona to their first European Cup in 1992.

Cruijff married Danny Coster in December 1968, and they remained together until his death. They had three children: son Jordi and daughters Chantal and Susila. Jordi followed his father into professional soccer, playing for Barcelona and the Netherlands national team. His smoking habit contributed to his lung cancer diagnosis. He lived in Barcelona after retiring and was active with the Johan Cruijff Foundation, promoting sports for children.

Cruijff invented Total Football, a style that emphasized fluid positions and high pressing. His philosophy influenced many coaches and players worldwide. He was voted the best European soccer player of the 20th century and received the UEFA President’s Award. The Johan Cruijff Foundation continues his work, and the Johan Cruijff College in Nijmegen, Netherlands, bears his name.
