On February 5, 1906, Richmond Reed Carradine—later known as John Carradine—was born in New York City to Genevieve Richmond Richmond, a reporter and artist, and William Reid Carradine, a surgeon. He spent his childhood in Poughkeepsie, New York, attending Christ Church School and later studying sculpture at Graphic Art School. After a family dispute, he left home to assist renowned Philadelphia sculptor Daniel Chester French. He roamed the South selling sketches before making his acting debut in Camille at a New Orleans theatre in 1925.

John Carradine reached Los Angeles in 1927 and started in local theatre. His on-screen debut came in Tol’able David 1930 under the name Peter Richmond. He became a protégé of John Barrymore and joined John Ford’s stock company, appearing in Ford films such as Stagecoach 1939 and The Grapes of Wrath 1940. With over 300 film appearances claimed, Carradine was one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood, all while maintaining a stage career in roles like Hamlet and Malvolio. In his later years, he specialized in horror, playing Count Dracula in four movies: House of Frankenstein 1944, House of Dracula 1945, Billy the Kid Versus Dracula 1966, and Nocturna 1979. He also appeared in eight Oscar Best Picture nominees, including The Ten Commandments 1956 and Around the World in 80 Days 1956.

John Carradine married four times: to Ardanelle Abigail McCool 1935-1945, Sonia Sorel 1944-1957, Doris Rich 1957-1971, and Emily Cisneros 1975-1988. He fathered several children, including actors Keith Carradine, Robert Carradine, David Carradine, and adopted son Bruce Carradine. In 1953, a contempt of court charge for alimony arrears landed him briefly in jail. Despite crippling arthritis in later life, he continued working. His grandson is actor Martha Plimpton.

John Carradine’s over 300 film appearances made him a familiar face to 20th-century audiences. His roles in eight National Film Registry titles—including The Invisible Man 1933, Bride of Frankenstein 1935, Stagecoach 1939, and The Grapes of Wrath 1940—demonstrate his lasting cultural impact. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum inducted him into its Hall of Great Western Performers in 2003. He is recalled for his distinctive voice, genre versatility, and four-film portrayal of Dracula.
