Who was David Bowie?

BIOGRAPHY

David Bowie — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

David Robert Jones was born in Brixton, London, on January 8, 1947, to Margaret Mary Jones and Haywood Stenton Jones. His father came from an affluent family involved in the Public Benefit Boot Co. At age 12, Bowie learned the saxophone, and he later cited Little Richard as his first musical influence after hearing him at eight.

He attended Ravens Wood School and the City Literary Institute, but his true education came from London’s music clubs. A childhood fight with friend George Underwood permanently dilated one pupil, giving him his distinctive mismatched eyes. Underwood later became a successful artist and designed album artwork for Bowie.

Career

Bowie’s commercial breakthrough came in 1969 with Space Oddity, released during the moon landing. After a period of decline, he reinvented himself as Ziggy Stardust in 1972, a concept album about a space-age rock star.

In 1975, he shifted to soul with Young Americans, featuring his first US number one, Fame. The mid-1970s saw heavy drug use, leading to a move to Berlin and a collaboration with Brian Eno on the trilogy Low 1977, Heroes 1977, and Lodger 1979.

After kicking his drug habit, he released Scary Monsters 1980 and then Let’s Dance 1983, produced by Nile Rodgers, which became a massive commercial success. The subsequent Serious Moonlight tour was his most successful. In the late 1980s, he formed Tin Machine to escape mainstream expectations.

After a hiatus, he returned with Black Tie White Noise 1992 and later collaborated with Eno again on Outside 1995. In 2003, he released Reality but suffered a heart attack in 2004. His final studio album, Blackstar, was released on his 69th birthday in 2016, two days before his death.

Personal life

Bowie married Angie Bowie in March 1970; their son Duncan Jones originally named Zowie was born in 1971. The couple divorced in 1980. He married supermodel Iman in April 1992, with his son serving as best man. Their daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones was born in August 2000.

Bowie struggled with cocaine and heroin addiction in the mid-1970s, which he later described as causing blackouts. He quit drugs by the end of the decade. In 1992, he moved to New York City, where he lived until his death. He underwent triple heart bypass surgery in 2004 after a heart attack and gave up his 50-cigarette-a-day habit.

Despite declining a CBE in 2000 and a knighthood in 2003, he accepted the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in 1999. He was an avid art collector and saved everything for his archives.

Legacy

David Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2013. His album Blackstar debuted at number one worldwide after his death, and at the 2017 Grammys he won all five nominated awards, his first musical Grammys. He became the oldest Brit Award winner in 2014 and the first posthumous winner in 2017.

Bowie influenced countless artists, from Iggy Pop and Lou Reed to Madonna and Nine Inch Nails. His 1972 appearance on Top of the Pops with Starman was called the gay moon landing by Caitlin Moran. He is remembered as a master of reinvention, a cultural figure whose work in music, film, and art continues to inspire.

Olivia has 6 years of experience writing biographical profiles and still approaches every subject like it's the first one. She covers everyone from debut musicians to Hall of Fame athletes to novelists most people have never heard of. She finds something worth reading in all of them. Her drafts tend to come in already clean, which her editor appreciates. She says good writing is just good thinking written down. Hard to argue with that.
