Early life

Jon Voight was born in Yonkers, New York, on December 29, 1938, to professional golfer Elmer Voight and Barbara Kamp. He attended the all-boys Roman Catholic Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, where he developed an interest in acting after performing in the school musical The Song of Norway. He graduated in 1956 and went on to study art at The Catholic University of America, earning a degree in 1960. After moving to New York City, he trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute to pursue an acting career.

Career

Voight made his film debut in the superhero comedy Fearless Frank 1967. His breakthrough came with Midnight Cowboy 1969, playing naive hustler Joe Buck. The film won Best Picture and earned Voight his first Oscar nomination. The thriller Deliverance 1972 followed, a critical and commercial success. In 1978, Voight won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as paraplegic veteran Luke Martin in Coming Home. Another Oscar nomination came for Runaway Train 1985, and a supporting actor nomination for Ali 2001, playing sportscaster Howard Cosell. Voight later appeared in Mission: Impossible 1996, Enemy of the State 1998, Anaconda 1997, and Transformers 2007.

Personal life

Voight married actress Lauri Peters in 1962; they divorced in 1967. He married actress and producer Marcheline Bertrand in 1971; they divorced in 1980. With Bertrand he had son James Haven born 1973 and daughter Angelina Jolie born 1975, who became an actress and filmmaker. Romantic links include Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross, among others. He is the godfather of actress Skyler Shaye and the grandfather of six Jolie-Pitt children.

Legacy

Voight’s performance in Midnight Cowboy 1969 earned him his first Oscar nomination and remains a notable film. His Oscar-winning role in Coming Home 1978 established his reputation for dramatic depth. Both films have been selected for the National Film Registry. In 2019, he was awarded the National Medal of the Arts. For more than six decades, Voight has inspired younger actors and remained active in the industry. He is remembered for his signature roles in Midnight Cowboy and Coming Home.
