Who is Ben Stiller?

BIOGRAPHY

Ben Stiller — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Ben Stiller grew up in New York City as the son of legendary comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. At age 10, he began shooting films on his Super 8 camera, often plotting revenge stories against bullies. He and his sister Amy performed Shakespeare plays at home in tights. Stiller attended the Cathedral School of St. John the Divine and later the Calhoun School before enrolling at UCLA. Dropping out of UCLA, he performed in the Tony Award-winning play The House of Blue Leaves alongside John Mahoney. During that run, he made a short parody of The Color of Money that Lorne Michaels aired on Saturday Night Live, leading to a year on SNL in 1989.

Career

Ben Stiller made his big screen debut in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun in 1987. He soon directed Back to Brooklyn for MTV, which led to his own sketch show, The Ben Stiller Show, in 1992. Though cancelled quickly, the show earned him an Emmy. Using his savings, Stiller directed and starred in Reality Bites 1994, now a cult classic. He later directed Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy 1996. The 1998 comedy There’s Something About Mary made him a mainstream star. He followed with hits like Meet the Parents 2000 and Zoolander 2001. In 2008, Stiller directed and starred in Tropic Thunder, which earned Robert Downey Jr. an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Personal life

Ben Stiller married actress Christine Taylor on May 13, 2000. They have two children: daughter Ella Olivia born April 10, 2002 and son Quinlin Dempsey born July 10, 2005. Both Stiller and Taylor have guest-starred on Friends and Arrested Development. In 2014, Stiller was diagnosed with prostate cancer; after treatment, he was declared cancer-free in 2016. He is known for his friendships with fellow actors Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Janeane Garofalo, who often appear in his films.

Legacy

Stiller belongs to the Frat Pack, a group of comedians including Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson whose films dominated 2000s comedy. He directed Robert Downey Jr. to an Oscar nomination for Tropic Thunder 2008. His early parody short led to his SNL gig, an early sign of his influence on sketch comedy. Philanthropically, Stiller helped raise millions for ALS and visited Haitian camps with Sean Penn. In 2010, Time magazine listed him among the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Stiller’s versatile career as a comedic actor and filmmaker shaped a generation of Hollywood comedy.
