Early life

The son of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy, Victor Emmanuel III was born on November 11, 1869 in Naples. He grew up in the royal household and attended the Nunziatella military academy, where he received a strict military education. His father’s assassination in 1900 thrust him onto the throne at age 30.

Career

Victor Emmanuel III became King of Italy in 1900 after the murder of his father. During his reign, Italy participated in World War I, and he allowed Benito Mussolini to become Prime Minister in 1922. Though the king remained nominally the head of state, he largely ceded power to the Fascist regime. He abdicated in 1946 as the monarchy faced collapse after World War II.

Personal life

Victor Emmanuel married Helen Petrovic Njegos of Montenegro on October 23, 1896. Together they had four children: Princess Mafalda, Umberto II, Giovanna, and Princess Maria Francesca. His son Umberto succeeded him briefly in 1946 before the monarchy was abolished.

Legacy

Victor Emmanuel III presided over Italy’s transition from monarchy to republic. His reign saw the rise of Fascism, and his decision to appoint Mussolini has been widely criticized. He appears in archival footage in multiple documentaries, including Mussolini: the First Fascist 2022. The monarchy ended with his abdication in 1946, and he died in exile the following year.
