Early life

Brownsville, Texas, June 22, 1936: Kris Kristofferson was born to Mary Ann Ashbrook and Lars Henry Kristofferson, a U.S. Air Force general of Swedish descent. His father pushed him toward a military career, but Kris also excelled as a Golden Gloves boxer and athlete. He attended Pomona College in California, earning a B.A. in Creative Literature in 1958, then won a Rhodes Scholarship to study literature at Oxford University.

After Oxford, Kristofferson joined the U.S. Army, achieved the rank of captain, and graduated from Airborne School, Ranger School, and flight school. He served in Germany and volunteered for Vietnam, but instead was offered a position as a professor of English literature at West Point. Disappointed he couldn’t fight, he resigned his commission in 1965 and moved to Nashville to pursue songwriting.

Career

In Nashville, Kristofferson worked sweeping floors in studios and as a commercial helicopter pilot. He gained Johnny Cash’s attention by landing a helicopter in Cash’s yard and handing him tapes. Cash recorded Sunday Morning Coming Down, which won the 1970 CMA Song of the Year. Kristofferson also wrote Me and Bobby McGee, a hit for Janis Joplin in 1971, and Help Me Make It Through the Night.

His acting career began with Cisco Pike 1971 and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid 1973, directed by Sam Peckinpah. He won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in A Star Is Born 1976, opposite Barbra Streisand. He later appeared in Convoy 1978, the Blade trilogy 1998–2004, and Payback 1999. A member of The Highwaymen alongside Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, he also released several albums.

After a career downturn following Heaven’s Gate 1980, he experienced a comeback in the 1990s and 2000s, continuing to record and perform. He hosted Saturday Night Live in 1976 and made numerous TV appearances.

Kristofferson married Frances Mavia Beer in 1961; they had two children, Tracy and Kris Jr., before divorcing in 1973. He married singer Rita Coolidge in 1973; they had a daughter, Casey, and their marriage ended in 1980, partly due to his heavy drinking. He quit alcohol in 1976. In 1983, he married Lisa Marie Meyers; they had five children—Jesse, Jody, Johnny, Kelly, and Blake—and remained together until his death.
