Who is Grace Jones?

BIOGRAPHY

Grace Jones — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

When she was 12, Grace Jones moved from Spanish Town, Jamaica to Syracuse, New York to join her family. Her father, Reverend Robert W. Jones, was a minister, and her mother, Marjorie Jones, raised the children. She attended Onondaga Community College and studied acting at Syracuse University, appearing in her first musical there. A drama professor recruited her for a play in Philadelphia, leading her to leave college early and pursue performance.

Career

Grace Jones moved to Paris after modeling in New York didn’t take off. Her androgynous look quickly made her a top model for designers like Yves Saint-Laurent and photographers like Helmut Newton. Disillusioned with modeling, she turned to acting, starting with a small role in the 1973 blaxploitation film Gordon’s War. Her film career soared in the 1980s with supporting roles in Conan the Destroyer 1984 as Zula, A View to a Kill 1985 as Bond villain May Day, and Vamp 1986 as a vampire queen. She also released several albums on Island Records, starting with Portfolio 1977, and had hits like La Vie en Rose. In 2017, she appeared in the documentary Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, directed by Sophie Fiennes.

Personal life

Grace Jones lived with Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren for four years; he appeared with her in A View to a Kill. She has one son, Paulo Goude born 1979, from a relationship with artist Jean-Paul Goude. She was in a relationship with music producer Chris Stanley from 1989 to 1991, but they never married. On February 24, 1996, she married Turkish-born Atila Altaunbay, who is 28 years her junior; they separated in 2004 but remain legally married.

Legacy

Grace Jones’s androgynous style and fearless performances challenged conventional beauty standards and inspired countless artists. She was dubbed the Queen of Gay Discos for her large gay following and sexually charged shows. Her role as May Day in A View to a Kill remains one of the most memorable Bond villain performances. In 2017, she was awarded the Order of Jamaica, her home country’s highest honor. She is still remembered for her impact on fashion, music, and film.
