BIOGRAPHY

Little Richard — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born the third child of Leva Mae and Charles Penniman in Macon, Georgia, Little Richard grew up in a large family with five sisters and six brothers. He attended Ballard-Hudson High School. Vaudeville star Spencer Snake Anthony influenced him early; Richard traveled with his show. His first recording session at WGST in Atlanta produced the local hit Every Hour, where he was backed by a band led by Billy Wright, whose use of heavy makeup and wild theatrics Richard would later copy.

Career

Little Richard’s breakout came with the suggestive hit Tutti Frutti in 1955, followed by Good Golly Miss Molly. Early touring bands included young unknowns James Brown, Billy Preston, and Jimi Hendrix. His energetic performances and flamboyant persona made him a rock n roll icon. In the 1980s, after overcoming a drug habit and becoming an ordained minister, he found renewed popularity through small acting roles on shows like Miami Vice and Full House, showcasing his comedic timing.

Personal life

Little Richard married Ernestine Campbell in 1959, and they had a son named Danny Penniman. He struggled with a debilitating drug habit but later became an ordained minister. He had one leg three inches shorter than the other, which sometimes caused his pant leg to fray. In 1987, he presided over the Las Vegas marriage of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

Legacy

Little Richard is a foundational figure in rock n roll. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990. Rolling Stone ranked him the 8th Greatest Rock n Roll Artist of all time. His influence extended to The Beatles’ Paul McCartney and David Bowie, who cited Richard as a major inspiration for his album Let’s Dance 1983. He is remembered for his electrifying stage presence and pioneering sound.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
