Who is M. Night Shyamalan?

BIOGRAPHY

M. Night Shyamalan — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

In 1970, M. Night Shyamalan was born in Mahé, Pondicherry, India, to Jayalakshmi, a Tamil obstetrician and gynecologist, and Nelliate C. Shyamalan, a Malayali doctor. His family moved to the Philadelphia suburb of Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. At age eight, he received a Super-8 camera that ignited his passion for filmmaking; by age 17, he had completed 45 homemade movies. He attended Episcopal Academy, a private school in Lower Merion, before studying at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Career

Shyamalan raised the funds himself for his debut feature, Praying with Anger 1992, which he wrote, directed, and starred in. His second film, Wide Awake 1998, was shot at the Philadelphia-area Catholic school he had attended. International breakthrough came in 1999 with The Sixth Sense, a supernatural thriller that became the second-highest-grossing film of the year and earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for him. He reteamed with Bruce Willis for Unbreakable 2000, then directed Mel Gibson in Signs 2002. He declined offers to direct multiple Harry Potter films as well as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe 2005. His later films include The Village 2004, Lady in the Water 2006, The Happening 2008, The Last Airbender 2010, After Earth 2013, The Visit 2015, and Split 2016.

Personal life

Shyamalan married Bhavna Vaswani in 1993. They have two daughters: Ishana Shyamalan and Saleka Shyamalan. The family resides in Wayne, Pennsylvania, part of Philadelphia’s affluent Main Line suburbs. His parents, wife, and nine other family members are either MDs or Ph.Ds. He maintains his production offices in a converted barn in suburban Philadelphia and wears a silver charm given by his father containing Sanskrit proverbs.

Legacy

Shyamalan revitalized the supernatural thriller genre with twist endings. His film The Sixth Sense was nominated for six Oscars, and he directed two Oscar-nominated performances: Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette in that film. He was awarded the Padma Shri in arts by the Indian government in 2008, as well as the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman. He has been featured on Premiere’s Power 100 list multiple times. His influence extends through his distinctive storytelling style and his mentorship of his daughter Ishana, who directed episodes of his series Servant. He remains best known for his early trilogy of twist-heavy thrillers that redefined modern horror.
