After being born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1960, Robin Roberts grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Her father, Lawrence Roberts, served with the Tuskegee Airmen. She attended Southeastern Louisiana University on a basketball scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1983.
Roberts joined Good Morning America in 2005 and became co-anchor in 2007, interviewing presidents and covering breaking news. She made cameo appearances in the film The Lego Ninjago Movie 2017 and the TV shows The Rookie and Empire. In 2023, she earned the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.
Roberts married longtime partner Amber Laign on September 8, 2023. Her sister, Sally Ann Roberts, is a news anchor for WWL-TV in New Orleans. In 2007, she underwent surgery for breast cancer, and in 2012 she was diagnosed with MDS, receiving a bone marrow transplant from Sally Ann.
