BIOGRAPHY

Oprah Winfrey — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born Orpah Gail Winfrey on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to Vernita Lee Winfrey and Vernon Winfrey, she learned to read at age 2½ and skipped grades by kindergarten. Raised in abject poverty, she received her first pair of shoes at age six in 1960. At 14, she gave birth to a son who died shortly after due to prematurity. Sexual abuse marked her early life; she later addressed it on her show and helped pass the Oprah Bill in the early 1990s. She attended multiple high schools, including Nicolet High School in Wisconsin and East Nashville Magnet High School, where she was voted most popular in 1971. She graduated from Tennessee State University with a degree in Speech and Performing Arts in 1987.

Career

Her broadcasting career began with a teenage internship at WVOL, an African-American radio station in Nashville in the late 1960s. She later co-hosted People Are Talking on WJZ-TV in Baltimore. In 1986, she launched The Oprah Winfrey Show, which became the highest-rated talk show in television history, airing nationally for 25 years until 2011. She made her film debut in 1985 with The Color Purple, earning an Oscar nomination. OWN followed in 2011. She also earned $260 million in 2006 alone. Winfrey has interviewed many celebrities and world leaders, and her book club segment sold an estimated 30 million books. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award came in 2011, and the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2018.

Personal life

She has been in a relationship with Stedman Graham since 1986. In 1968, she gave birth to a son, Canaan, who died shortly after birth. Her half-sister Patricia Lee died in 2003 under mysterious circumstances. She has owned multiple homes, including a $17 million waterfront property in West Vancouver. A dedicated journal keeper since age 15, she attended the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. Her golden retriever Gracie died in 2007.

Legacy

She became the first African American woman billionaire and the greatest black philanthropist in U.S. history. In 2013, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The National Women’s Hall of Fame inducted her in 1994, and she received Kennedy Center Honors in 2010. Her talk show inspired millions, and her book club boosted sales of many titles. VH1 ranked her #1 on its 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons list in 2003. She transformed daytime television and used her platform to address social issues.
