Who is Salman Rushdie?

BIOGRAPHY

Salman Rushdie — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Salman Rushdie was born on June 19, 1947 in Bombay, British India, to Anis Ahmed Rushdie. He attended Cathedral and John Connon School in Bombay before moving to England at 14 to study at Rugby School. At King’s College, Cambridge, he read history, graduating in 1968. Speaking Urdu at home and English at school, his multicultural upbringing informed his literary voice.

Career

Rushdie’s breakthrough came with his second novel, Midnight’s Children 1981, which won the Booker Prize and established his reputation for magical realism. His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses 1988, sparked international controversy when Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for his death on February 14, 1989. For years, he lived in hiding under police protection. Before becoming a full-time novelist, he worked as a copywriter at Ayer Barker in London until 1982, where he helped create the advertising slogan naughty but nice for cakes. He later wrote for children with Haroun and the Sea of Stories 1990, dedicated to his son Zafar.

Personal life

Rushdie married Clarissa Luard in 1976; they had a son, Zafar, born 1980, before divorcing in 1987. He married novelist Marianne Wiggins in 1988, divorcing in 1993. His third marriage was to Elizabeth West in 1997, with whom he had his second son, Milan, born 1999; they divorced in 2004. On April 17, 2004, he married television host Padma Lakshmi; they divorced in 2007. In 2021, he married poet and photographer Rachel Eliza Griffiths. He also became the father-in-law of Scottish jazz singer Natalie Coyle.

Legacy

Rushdie’s influence on literature and free expression is immense. His blend of historical fiction and magical realism inspired a generation of writers. He was knighted as a Knight Bachelor in 2007 for services to literature and appointed Member of the Order of the Companion of Honour in 2022. Despite the fatwa and a near-fatal stabbing on August 12, 2022, he continues to write and speak. He is most remembered as the author of Midnight’s Children and The Satanic Verses, and as a symbol of artistic courage.

Senior Copy Editor & Editorial Fact Reviewer

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
