Early life

Stefan Danailov was born on December 9, 1942, in Sofia, Bulgaria, to Lambi Danailov. He grew up with his sister Rositsa in the capital. His acting career began early; he made his screen debut as a teenager in 1956. He graduated from the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in 1962.

Career

Danailov first gained recognition through the television series Na vseki kilometar. In 1984, he played Nazareno Nuzzo Marciano in the Italian miniseries The Octopus, bringing him international attention. The next year, he portrayed Tsar Boris I in the historical film Boris I: Part 1 โ€“ The Baptizing. He appeared in numerous other films, including The Weddings of Ioan Assen 1975, The Central Warmth 1978, and Ladies’ Choice 1980. In the 2010s, he played Dimitar Kasabov in the TV series Glass Home 2010 and the Patriarch in Sofia Residents in Excess 2011. He returned to the stage in 2019 for Peter Quilter’s The Actress, even as his health declined. He also served as Bulgaria’s Minister of Culture from 2005 to 2009.

Personal life

Danailov was married to Maria Dimitrova Danailova and had a sister, Rositsa. Known as Lambo, he was a lifelong member of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and ran as its candidate for vice-president in 2011. He never switched parties, unlike many Bulgarian actors. In his final months, despite his lymphoma, he kept performing. His last show was on September 9, 2019, in Varna, in Peter Quilter’s The Actress, where the audience gave him a standing ovation.

Legacy

Danailov received the title People’s Artist of Bulgaria, the Dimitrov Prize medal, Askeer, the Order of Stara Planina, and the Saint Paisius of Hilendar State Prize. After his death, the Sofia Municipal Council unanimously named a garden in the Lozenets Quarter after him on October 27, 2022, backed by 70 of his colleagues and students. He is remembered for his versatility, from his early work in Na vseki kilometar to his international role in The Octopus, and for his tenure as Minister of Culture from 2005 to 2009.
