Who was Diane Keaton?

BIOGRAPHY

Diane Keaton — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born Diane Hall on January 5, 1946 in Los Angeles, California, Keaton was the oldest of four children to Dorothy Deanne Keaton, an amateur photographer, and John Newton Hall, a civil engineer and real estate broker. She studied drama at Santa Ana College before dropping out to attend the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City.

After training in summer stock productions like The Importance of Being Earnest and Oh! What a Lovely War, she landed her first major stage role in the Broadway rock musical Hair in 1968, where she gained attention by refusing to remove her clothing as understudy to the lead.

Career

In 1968, Woody Allen cast Keaton in his Broadway play Play It Again, Sam, beginning a professional and personal partnership. She reprised the role in the 1972 film adaptation, which was her first film with Allen. That same year, Francis Ford Coppola cast her as Kay Adams in The Godfather 1972, a role she reprised in The Godfather Part II 1974 and The Godfather Part III 1990. She continued collaborating with Allen on Sleeper 1973 and Love and Death 1975.

In 1977, Keaton broke from comedy with a role in Looking for Mr. Goodbar and then took the title role in Annie Hall 1977, written for her by Allen. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress and the BAFTA Award. She next starred in Warren Beatty’s Reds 1981 as journalist Louise Bryant, earning Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. She directed the documentary Heaven 1987 and episodes of Twin Peaks 1990, and made her feature directorial debut with Unstrung Heroes 1995.

Personal life

Keaton had a long-term romantic relationship with Woody Allen from the late 1960s through the 1970s, and they made a total of eight films together. Relationships with Warren Beatty and a 20-year intermittent relationship with Al Pacino spanning 1971 to 1991 followed. She has never married and claimed in interviews that she hasn’t dated anyone in 35 years.

Keaton adopted two children: a daughter, Dexter Keaton born 1995, and a son, Duke Keaton born 2000. Her siblings are brother Randy Hall and sisters Robin and Dorrie Hall. In 2020, she published a memoir about her relationship with her alcoholic brother, titled Brother & Sister.

Legacy

Keaton’s performance in Annie Hall 1977 sparked a fashion trend with her unisex suits and ties, reviving a style associated with Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn. The American Film Institute awarded her the 2017 AFI Life Achievement Award for her contributions to American culture. She has appeared in four films selected for the National Film Registry: The Godfather 1972, The Godfather Part II 1974, Annie Hall 1977, and Manhattan 1979. She won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actress for the same performance in Annie Hall.
