Who was Tom Stoppard?

BIOGRAPHY

Tom Stoppard — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Fleeing Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia as a child, Tom Stoppard’s family stopped identifying as Jews and settled in England. His father Evžen Sträussler died in the war, and his mother Martha remarried Kenneth Stoppard, a British army officer who gave Tom his surname and insisted the family’s Jewish roots remain secret. Tom attended Mount Hermon School in Darjeeling, India, and later Pocklington School in England. He began his career as a journalist for the Western Daily Press in Bristol, where he befriended fellow journalist A.C.H. Smith.

Career

Stoppard’s first major success came in 1967 with the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1968. He followed with Travesties 1974, which won the Tony Award for Best Play; The Real Thing 1982, also a Tony winner; and Arcadia 1993, which won the Laurence Olivier Award. In 1998, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Shakespeare in Love, co-written with Marc Norman. Stoppard also worked uncredited as a script doctor on films like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1989 and Sleepy Hollow 1999. His three-play cycle The Coast of Utopia won a record seven Tony Awards in 2007.

Personal life

Stoppard was married three times: to Jose Ingle from 1962 to 1972, then to television doctor Miriam Stoppard from 1972 to 1992, and finally to Sabrina Guinness from 2014 until his death. He had four sons: Oliver and Barnaby with Jose, and William and Ed with Miriam. Ed Stoppard is an actor, and William is a producer. He was also an admirer of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Legacy

In 2008, the Telegraph ranked Tom Stoppard No. 11 on its list of the 100 most powerful people in British culture. He won four Tony Awards for Best Play, received a knighthood in 1997, and the Order of Merit in 2000. His play The Coast of Utopia holds the record for most Tony Awards 7 for a play production as of 2023. His works, such as Arcadia and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, continue to be performed worldwide.
