Gabriel García Márquez was born on March 6, 1927, in Aracataca, a small town in the Magdalena region of Colombia. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Nicolas Ricardo Márquez, a veteran of the Thousand Days War, and Tranquilinia Iguarán Cotes. This environment of storytelling and political history shaped his literary imagination. He later studied law and journalism at the National University of Colombia, though he never completed a degree.

García Márquez began his career as a journalist in 1948 and worked as a foreign correspondent in cities including Caracas, Rome, Paris, and New York. His breakthrough came in 1967 with the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude, which blended realism and fantasy in a style that defined magical realism. He followed with Chronicle of a Death Foretold 1981 and Love in the Time of Cholera 1985, both major successes. In 1982 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. He also acted in films such as There Are No Thieves in This Village 1965.

García Márquez married Mercedes Barcha in 1958; she remained his lifelong partner and muse until his death. They had two sons: Rodrigo García Márquez, who became a filmmaker, and Gonzalo García Barcha. He was a close friend of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, a relationship that reflected his left-leaning political views. After being diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1999, he wrote his memoir Vivir para contarla 2002. He died of pneumonia on April 17, 2014, in Mexico City.

Gabriel García Márquez popularized magical realism with his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, which has sold millions of copies and influenced authors such as Salman Rushdie and Isabel Allende. Posthumously, he was honored on commemorative postage stamps from Spain 2015 and Colombia 2015. His stories continue to be adapted for film, including Love in the Time of Cholera 2007. He blended myth and reality in his works.
