Early life

On 8 October 1958, Ursula Gertrud Albrecht was born in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, to Adele and Ernst Albrecht. Her father, Ernst Albrecht, served as minister president of Lower Saxony, exposing her to politics from a young age. She attended the European School in Brussels I and later studied medicine at the Hannover Medical School, the University of Göttingen, the University of Münster, and the London School of Economics.

Career

Ursula von der Leyen began her political career as German Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in 2005, serving until 2009. She then became Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs from 2009 to 2013, and Federal Minister of Defence from 2013 to 2019. In 2019, she assumed the presidency of the European Commission. She has also worked as an executive producer on programs such as Tagesschau and DAS!, appearing as herself.

Personal life

Ursula von der Leyen married Heiko von der Leyen on 21 September 1986. The couple has seven children: David Echter, born 21 August 1987; Sophie Charlotte, born 2 December 1989; Maria Donata, born 28 March 1992; Victoria Ursula, born 20 March 1994; Johanna Gertrud, also born 20 March 1994; Egmont Ulrich, born 12 March 1998; and Gracia Diotima, born 25 October 1999. She has one brother, Hans Holger Albrecht.

Legacy

Ursula von der Leyen has been President of the European Commission since 2019, overseeing EU responses to major crises. Her honors include the Charlemagne Prize, the Knight Grand Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania, and the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Time 100 and BBC 100 Women lists recognized her.
