Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes in 1887 with A Study in Scarlet, producing 4 novels and 56 short stories about the detective. He preferred historical novels like The White Company 1891, but Holmes stories made his name. A medical doctor, he served in the Boer War and was knighted in 1902.
