Who was Walt Disney?

BIOGRAPHY

Walt Disney — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

December 5, 1901 marked the birth of Walt Disney in Chicago, Illinois, to Flora Call Disney and Elias Disney. His father was a Canadian-born farmer and businessperson. The family moved to Kansas City when Walt was seven, where he spent most of his childhood. At age 16, during World War I, he faked his age to join the American Red Cross as an ambulance driver. After returning, he won a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute, where he met fellow animator Ub Iwerks. The two started their own company and produced the Newman’s Laugh-O-Grams series for the Newman theater chain in the early 1920s.

Career

After their company went bankrupt, Disney and Iwerks moved to Hollywood in 1923. They created the Alice Comedies, a series combining live-action and animation, distributed by M.J. Winkler. In 1928, Disney lost the rights to his successful character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit when distributor Charles Mintz stole the character and most of his animators. On a train ride home, Disney doodled a mouse named Mickey. With Iwerks as his only animator and his wife Lillian inking the cells, they produced three Mickey Mouse cartoons. The third, Steamboat Willie 1928, added synchronized sound and became a massive hit, with Disney voicing Mickey.

In 1929, Disney launched the Silly Symphonies series. Flowers and Trees 1932 became the first cartoon in color and won an Oscar. Three Little Pigs 1933 was a cultural phenomenon. In 1937, Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated feature, which earned critical and commercial success and an honorary Oscar. He continued with Pinocchio 1940, Dumbo 1941, and Bambi 1942. After a studio strike in 1941, Disney produced packaged features and later live-action films like Treasure Island 1950. Animated hits included Cinderella 1950, Alice in Wonderland 1951, Peter Pan 1953, Lady and the Tramp 1955, Sleeping Beauty 1959, and One Hundred and One Dalmatians 1961.

In 1954, Disney ventured into television with The Wonderful World of Disney to promote his upcoming theme park. He opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California in 1955. Mary Poppins 1964 mixed live-action with animation and won multiple Oscars. Disney continued planning a Florida theme park but died before its completion.

Personal life

Walt Disney married Lillian Disney on July 13, 1925, and they had one biological daughter, Diane Disney Miller, born in 1933. They adopted a daughter, Sharon, in 1936. Disney chain-smoked, which led to lung cancer. He avoided smoking in public, especially around children. His brother Roy O. Disney remained his business partner throughout his life. Disney disliked being called Mr. Disney and insisted on being called Walt. He built a life-size train set around his home in Holmby Hills, California.

Legacy

Walt Disney holds the record for most Academy Awards won by an individual, with 22 competitive Oscars and three honorary awards. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1939. His creation Mickey Mouse became a global icon. Disneyland revolutionized theme parks when it opened in 1955, followed by Walt Disney World in 1971. The Disney company continues to produce films and operate theme parks worldwide. The National Inventors Hall of Fame inducted Disney in 2000 for the multiplane camera. Disney remains a pioneer of animation and family entertainment.
