BIOGRAPHY

Barbara Bush — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Barbara Pierce was born on June 8, 1925, in New York City, New York, to Pauline Robinson and Marvin Pierce. Her father was the president of McCall Corporation, publisher of women’s magazines McCall’s and Redbook. She attended Rye Country Day School in Rye, New York, and later graduated from Ashley Hall in Charleston, South Carolina in 1943. She briefly attended Smith College before leaving to marry George H.W. Bush in 1945.

Career

Barbara Bush’s primary public role was as First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993. She used that platform to champion literacy, establishing the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Her work earned her the Harold W. McGraw Prize in Education and induction into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame. She also made cameo appearances in documentaries such as Frontline 1983 and Fahrenheit 9/11 2004 as archival footage.

Personal life

Barbara married George H.W. Bush on January 5, 1945, a union that lasted 73 years until her death. They had six children: George W., Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Dorothy, and Robin, who died of leukemia in 1953 at age three. Barbara suffered from Graves disease and depression, and had open heart surgery in 2009. The family resided in Houston, Texas, and the Bushes were known for their close-knit bond.

Legacy

Barbara Bush and Abigail Adams are the only women in American history to be both the wife of one president and the mother of another. Her literacy advocacy established a lasting legacy through the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 1997 and received honorary doctorates from Hofstra University and the University of Miami. She is remembered for her unpretentious style, fake pearls, and sharp wit, as noted in her New York Times obituary.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
