Ben Platt was born in Los Angeles, California on September 24, 1993 to Marc Platt, an Emmy and Tony award-winning producer, and Julie Platt. He attended Harvard-Westlake School and later enrolled at Columbia University. As a child, he attended Camp Ramah in California, where he performed the lead role of Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls entirely in Hebrew, an experience that confirmed his love for musical theater. His older brother Jonah Platt also pursued acting, performing in the Broadway production of Wicked, produced by their father.

Ben Platt began his professional acting career at age 13 in a production of The Sound of Music in 2006. He made his Broadway debut in The Book of Mormon in 2012, becoming the youngest actor to play Elder Cunningham at age 19. His breakthrough came when he originated the title role in Dear Evan Hansen in 2015, earning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2017, making him the youngest solo winner in that category at age 23. He also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and a Daytime Emmy for the song Waving Through a Window. In September 2017, he signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and released his debut album Sing to Me Instead in 2019.

Ben Platt is married to actor Noah Galvin. The actor is the son of producer Marc Platt and Julie Platt, and the younger brother of actor Jonah Platt. The couple has a dog named Bella, named after the Barden Bellas from Pitch Perfect. Platt attended The Adderley School theater camp and enjoys SoulCycle as a form of exercise.

Ben Platt’s portrayal of Evan Hansen led to his inclusion in Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2017, with an homage written by Zac Efron. He was the youngest actor to win the Distinguished Performance Award from the Obie Awards for Dear Evan Hansen in 2016. His success opened doors for other young actors on Broadway, and his recording of the Dear Evan Hansen cast album won a Grammy. He continues to influence a new generation of performers.
