Who is Ringo Starr?

BIOGRAPHY

Ringo Starr — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Ringo Starr was born Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940, in a small two-storey house in Liverpool’s working-class area. His parents, Elsie and Richard Starkey, divorced when he was three, and he moved with his mother to another home in Liverpool.

At Silas Infants Schools, he suffered from severe illnesses that ruined his education: he had a ruptured appendix leading to peritonitis and a coma, then a concussion, and later chronic pleurisy. At 15 he could barely read or write but had aptitude for woodwork and mechanics. He dropped out of school, working as a delivery boy, barman, and trainee joiner before his stepfather bought him a drum kit, sparking his dream to become a drummer.

Career

In 1957, Ringo Starr joined the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group, then played with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, where he legally changed his name to Ringo Starr. On June 6, 1962, the Beatles auditioned for George Martin, who recommended replacing drummer Pete Best. Ringo joined the band in September 1962, contributing to their first hit Love Me Do, which charted in the UK and topped the US singles chart.

Ringo’s steady drumming and positive disposition became essential to the Beatles’ image and sound. He coined the title A Hard Day’s Night for their 1964 film and received critical praise for his acting. During his Beatles career, he sang lead on songs like Yellow Submarine and wrote Octopus’s Garden 1969 and Don’t Pass Me By 1968.

After the Beatles’ breakup in 1970, Ringo launched a solo career with hits like Photograph and It Don’t Come Easy, featuring George Harrison. He appeared at the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971 and formed the All-Starr Band in 1989, touring continuously.

Personal life

Ringo Starr married his longtime girlfriend Maureen Cox in 1965, and they had three children: Zak, Jason, and Lee. The couple divorced in 1975. In 1981, he married actress Barbara Bach, who had been in the audience at the Beatles’ 1965 Shea Stadium concert.

Starr struggled with alcohol in the 1980s but entered rehabilitation with his wife and returned to performing sober. He divides his time between residences in England, Switzerland, and Los Angeles.

Legacy

Ringo Starr revolutionized the role of the drummer in popular music, making drummers equal partners to lead musicians. His left-handed playing on a right-handed kit created unique accents and fills that became integral to the Beatles’ sound. Phil Collins has cited Starr as his biggest influence, particularly admiring his rolls and fills on songs like Ticket to Ride and A Day in the Life.

Starr was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Beatle in 1988 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010. He is remembered for his steady beat, witty remarks, and as the drummer who completed the greatest band in history.

She covers everyone from debut musicians to Hall of Fame athletes to novelists most people have never heard of. She finds something worth reading in all of them. Her drafts tend to come in already clean, which her editor appreciates. She says good writing is just good thinking written down. Hard to argue with that.
