Who is Francis Ford Coppola?

BIOGRAPHY

Francis Ford Coppola — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Polio kept Francis Ford Coppola bedridden as a child in Queens, New York, where he staged puppet shows and made home movies. Born in Detroit on April 7, 1939, he was raised by composer Carmine Coppola and former actress Italia Coppola. After attending 24 schools, including New York Military Academy with classmate Troy Donahue, he earned a drama degree from Hofstra University in 1960. A graduate film degree from UCLA followed in 1967, where he trained under Roger Corman as a soundman, dialogue director, and associate producer.

Career

Coppola wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for Patton in 1970, then adapted Mario Puzo’s The Godfather in 1972. The film became the highest-grossing movie to that point and won Best Picture. He followed with The Conversation in 1974, winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and The Godfather Part II in 1974, which netted six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay — making Coppola the first director to win Oscars for producing, directing, and writing the same film. In 1979, he released Apocalypse Now, a Vietnam War epic inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness that earned a second Palme d’Or and two Oscars. Coppola executive produced Kagemusha for Akira Kurosawa and helped launch Nicolas Cage’s career.

Personal life

Coppola married Eleanor Neil in 1963; they remained together until her death in 2024. The couple had three children: Gian-Carlo, Roman, and Sofia. In 1986, Gian-Carlo died in a boating accident at age 22. Coppola’s sister Talia Shire appeared in his Godfather films, earning an Oscar nomination for The Godfather Part II. He has been a winemaker since 1975, owning the Rubicon estate in Rutherford, California, and co-owns the Rubicon restaurant in San Francisco with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams.

Legacy

Coppola is one of the most influential directors of the New Hollywood movement. He directed two actors to Oscars for the same role — Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro as Vito Corleone. Four of his films are in the National Film Registry: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, and Apocalypse Now. The AFI awarded him a Life Achievement Award in 2010, and he received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. His nephew Nicolas Cage, daughter Sofia Coppola, and father Carmine Coppola make three generations of Oscar winners in the family. Coppola is remembered as the daring filmmaker who pushed boundaries to create cinematic masterpieces.
