Who was Burt Reynolds?

BIOGRAPHY

Burt Reynolds — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

February 11, 1936 marked the birth of Burton Leon Reynolds Jr. in Lansing, Michigan. After World War II, his family moved to Riviera Beach, Florida, where his father served as chief of police. At Palm Beach Lakes Community High School, Reynolds excelled as an athlete, and he attended Florida State University on a football scholarship, becoming an All-Star Southern Conference halfback. A knee injury and a car accident ended his football career, forcing him to drop out of college and pursue acting in New York.

He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre while working odd jobs, and landed TV spots and theatre roles. While performing in a production of Mister Roberts, he was spotted and signed to a TV contract.

Career

The backwoods thriller Deliverance 1972, directed by John Boorman, was Reynolds’ breakthrough. Before that, he had recurring roles in TV westerns like Gunsmoke 1955 and his own series Hawk 1966. During the 1970s, he became a box-office star with hits like Smokey and the Bandit 1977, which grossed over $100 million, The Longest Yard 1974, and Semi-Tough 1977. He also directed several films, including Sharky’s Machine 1981.

Following a late-1980s slump, Reynolds revived his television career with B.L. Stryker 1989 and Evening Shade 1990, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for the latter. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a charming porn director in Boogie Nights 1997.

Personal life

Reynolds married twice, first to actress Judy Carne 1963-1965 and later to Loni Anderson 1988-1994. He and Anderson adopted a son, Quinton A. Reynolds, in 1988. He had long-term relationships with Dinah Shore, who was 20 years his senior, and Sally Field, whom he called the love of his life despite her refusal of his marriage proposals.

His close friends included Johnny Carson, Dom DeLuise, and Jerry Reed. Reynolds cited financial troubles after his divorce from Anderson and once filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1996. He underwent quintuple heart bypass surgery in February 2010.

Legacy

Reynolds topped the box-office for five consecutive years from 1978 to 1982, a feat matched by only a few actors. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and induction into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame honor his career. His performance in Boogie Nights introduced him to a new generation, and his influence appears in modern action-comedy films. Through career highs and lows, he remained a resilient Hollywood figure. Most remember him as the charismatic star of Smokey and the Bandit, a symbol of 1970s popular culture.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
