Early life

When Gwyneth Paltrow was eleven, her family moved to Massachusetts, where her father Bruce Paltrow directed summer stock. She learned acting from her parents, including her Tony Award-winning mother Blythe Danner. She graduated from the Spence School and studied Art History at UC Santa Barbara, but left to pursue acting. Her father’s family was Jewish from Eastern and Central Europe, while her mother has German, English, and Irish ancestry.

Career

Gwyneth Paltrow’s first major role was Emma Woodhouse in Emma 1996, which led to her Oscar-winning performance in Shakespeare in Love 1998. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for that film, as well as the Golden Globe and SAG Awards. She followed with The Talented Mr. Ripley 1999, The Royal Tenenbaums 2001, and Shallow Hal 2001. In 2004 she played a scientist in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and later starred in Proof 2005. She was cast as Pepper Potts in Iron Man 2008, a role she played in several Marvel films including The Avengers 2012 and Avengers: Infinity War 2018.

Personal life

Gwyneth Paltrow got engaged to actor Brad Pitt in December 1996, but they ended the engagement in 1997. She married Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in 2003, and they had two children: Apple Blythe Alison Martin born May 14, 2004 and Moses Bruce Anthony Martin born April 8, 2006. The couple separated in March 2014 and later divorced. Paltrow suffered a miscarriage of a third child and experienced postpartum depression after Moses’ birth. In September 2018, she married television producer Brad Falchuk after a four-year relationship.

Legacy

Gwyneth Paltrow’s performance in Shakespeare in Love 1998 earned her an Academy Award at age 26, making her one of the youngest Best Actress winners. Her role as Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with Iron Man 2008, brought her a global audience. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010.
