Corin Redgrave made his stage debut at age 22 in 1961, playing Lysander at the Royal Court Theatre in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Tony Richardson. The son of actors Sir Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, he was born July 16, 1939 in Marylebone, London. Educated at Westminster School and King’s College, Cambridge, he followed his family into acting.

After his Royal Court debut, Redgrave appeared in Chips with Everything, which transferred to New York. In 1972 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing Octavius in Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. His film roles included A Man for All Seasons 1966 and The Charge of the Light Brigade 1968, both with his sisters. The Australian film Between Wars 1974 earned him critical acclaim for his leading role, as did In the Name of the Father 1993. On stage, he won the 1998 Olivier Award for portraying Boss Whalen in Tennessee Williams’ Not About Nightingales, receiving a Tony nomination the following year. In 1993, he and his sister Vanessa founded the Moving Theatre company.

Redgrave married Deirdre Hamilton Hill, a former model; they had a son Luke and a daughter Jemma. After divorcing, he married actress Kika Markham in 1985. They had two sons, Harvey and Arden. He met Markham in 1970 while filming the TV play Happy Ever After. He received a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2000 and suffered a heart attack in 2005. He died on April 6, 2010 at a London hospital in Tooting.

Beyond acting, Redgrave co-founded the Peace and Progress Party with his sister Vanessa in 2004, campaigning against the Iraq War and for the closure of Guantanamo Bay. He published a biography of his father, Michael Redgrave: My Father, in 1995. His Olivier Award-winning performance in Not About Nightingales is a key achievement in his stage career. Redgrave is remembered for his strong presence in British theatre and his passionate political activism.
