Who is Demi Moore?

BIOGRAPHY

Demi Moore — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Roswell, New Mexico welcomed Demi Moore in 1962, but she never knew her biological father Charles Harmon, who left before she was born. Her mother Virginia later married Danny Guynes, whose frequent job changes forced the family to move 40 times. The household was unstable, with heavy drinking and arguments, until Danny Guynes committed suicide when Demi was a teenager.

At 16, Demi quit school and began working as a pin-up girl. She married rock musician Freddy Moore at 18, a relationship that lasted four years. During this time, she landed a regular role on the soap opera General Hospital at age 19, setting the stage for her acting career.

Career

Her breakout came in 1985 with St. Elmo’s Fire, a film directed by Joel Schumacher that almost ended her career when he threatened to fire her for showing up high. She entered withdrawal treatment and returned after a week clean. Publicity stunts, including a nude pregnant cover of Vanity Fair in 1991, helped keep her in the spotlight.

The supernatural romance Ghost 1990 made her a global star, grossing over $500 million worldwide. She followed with controversial hits Indecent Proposal 1993 and Disclosure 1994. In 1995, she became the highest-paid actress in film history, earning $12.5 million for Striptease 1996. Roles in G.I. Jane 1997 and later films like The Substance 2024 have kept her in the public eye.

Personal life

Demi Moore married three times. Her first marriage to musician Freddy Moore lasted from 1981 to 1985. She then married actor Bruce Willis in 1987; they separated in 1998 and divorced in 2000. With Willis, she has three daughters: Rumer born 1988, Scout 1991, and Tallulah 1994. Her third marriage to Ashton Kutcher lasted from 2005 to 2013, with separation occurring in 2011.

Her personal life has included struggles with addiction. Director Joel Schumacher’s ultimatum during St. Elmo’s Fire led her to quit drugs and alcohol. She has also been open about her childhood trauma, including meeting her biological father at age 13 and later cutting ties. As of 2024, she has appeared on magazine covers every year since 1980.

Legacy

Demi Moore shattered Hollywood salary ceilings by becoming the first actress to earn $10 million per film, peaking at $12.5 million for Striptease. Her 1991 nude pregnant Vanity Fair cover, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, sparked widespread discussion about motherhood and body image.

She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Her influence extends to her role as a Brat Pack member and her longevity in the industry; she has been on magazine covers every year since 1980, longer than Madonna. She set a precedent for equal pay, becoming the first actress to command a $10 million salary.
