Who is David Beckham?

BIOGRAPHY

David Beckham — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

David Robert Joseph Beckham was born on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, East London, to Sandra Georgina, a hairdresser, and Ted Beckham, a kitchen fitter. His maternal grandfather was Jewish, an influence he acknowledged with a Hebrew tattoo from the Song of Songs. His parents were Manchester United fans, and they sent him to Bobby Charlton’s football school in Manchester. He served as a match mascot for Manchester United against West Ham United in 1986.

He attended Glendower Preparatory School and later Chingford Foundation School, where his football talent emerged. At 14, he signed with Manchester United’s youth program, alongside future teammates Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes.

Career

Beckham debuted for Manchester United in 1992, but his breakthrough came in the 1996-97 season when he scored from the halfway line against Wimbledon. In the 1998 World Cup, he scored his first England goal against Colombia but was sent off against Argentina, becoming a scapegoat after England’s elimination. He rebounded in 1999, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League treble with United.

In 2003, after a falling-out with manager Alex Ferguson, Beckham signed for Real Madrid for a reported £24.5 million. Debuting with the number 23 shirt as a tribute to Michael Jordan, he helped Madrid win the La Liga title in 2006-07. He served as England captain from 2000 until after the 2006 World Cup, scoring in three consecutive World Cups 1998, 2002, 2006.

In 2007, Beckham moved to LA Galaxy on a five-year contract worth up to $50 million annually. He won the MLS Cup in 2011 and 2012 and played on loan at AC Milan in 2009 and 2010 to maintain fitness. He finished his career with a short stint at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.

Personal life

Beckham married Victoria Adams, a member of the Spice Girls, on July 4, 1999. The couple, known as Posh and Becks, have four children: Brooklyn born 1999, Romeo 2002, Cruz 2005, and Harper 2011. Their wedding was attended by many celebrities, and Gary Neville served as best man. Beckham’s friendship with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes led to their attendance at his final Real Madrid match in 2007.

Beckham has several prominent godparents for his children, including Elizabeth Hurley, Elton John, and David Furnish. He suffered from ornithophobia fear of birds and ataxophobia fear of disorder.

Legacy

David Beckham earned over $250 million from his LA Galaxy contract and endorsements, reshaping the footballer as a global brand. His free-kick technique, known worldwide as the Beckham, lifts the ball over the wall and bends it toward the far post. He became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2005 and helped promote London’s successful 2012 Olympic bid.

In 2003, he was appointed an OBE for services to football. In 2025, he was knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours List for services to sports and charity. He was inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame and the Premier League Hall of Fame. The film Love Actually listed his right foot as one of Britain’s national treasures.

Senior Copy Editor & Editorial Fact Reviewer

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
