Who is Beyoncé?

BIOGRAPHY

Beyoncé — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Singing in the church choir at St. John’s Church in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles showed early musical talent. Born September 4, 1981, she attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and Alief Elsik High School. Her mother Tina Knowles designed glittering costumes for her performances, and her father Mathew Knowles managed Destiny’s Child. She has a younger sister, Solange Knowles, who became a singer. Beyoncé is of African-American and Louisiana Creole descent.

Career

Destiny’s Child, discovered by Whitney Houston, released their debut album in 1998. Beyoncé co-wrote hits like Bootylicious and Independent Women. In 2000, she toured as opening act for Christina Aguilera. Her 2003 solo debut Dangerously in Love featured Crazy in Love, which became her biggest hit and earned five Grammy Awards at the 2004 ceremony. In 2005, she sang three Oscar-nominated songs at the 77th Academy Awards. At the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010, she set a record for a female artist by winning six Grammys in a single night, including Song of the Year for Single Ladies.

Personal life

Beyoncé married rapper Jay-Z on April 4, 2008. They have three children: Blue Ivy Carter, born in 2012, and twins Rumi Carter and Sir Carter, born in 2017. To overcome shyness, she developed the stage persona Sasha Fierce. She is best friends with Kelly Rowland since childhood and has a close relationship with her sister Solange.

Legacy

Beyoncé has won 24 Grammy Awards and is the first African-American woman to win the ASCAP Pop Songwriter of the Year Award in 2001. She received the Billboard Millennium Award and was named to Time 100. At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, she allowed Taylor Swift to finish her acceptance speech after an interruption. Her clothing line House of Dereon and fragrances like Heat expanded her brand.
