Early life

Demi Lovato was born on August 20, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They grew up in Dallas, Texas, where their mother Dianna De La Garza was a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and a country recording artist. Their father Patrick Lovato was of Mexican descent and struggled with addiction, dying of cancer in 2013.

Lovato attended Grapevine High School, graduating a year early in 2009. They began acting at a young age, appearing on Barney & Friends alongside Selena Gomez, forming a lifelong friendship and later co-creating The Demi and Selena Show.

Career

Lovato’s breakthrough came in 2008 when they starred in Camp Rock alongside the Jonas Brothers, and released their debut album Don’t Forget on September 23, 2008, which debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard 200. In 2011, their single Skyscraper debuted at No. 10 on the Hot 100, becoming their first top 10 debut.

They continued with hits like Sorry Not Sorry and Cool for the Summer, both earning multi-platinum certifications. In 2022, they released Holy FvcK, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart and was hailed as their best work by Variety. Lovato has been nominated for two Grammy Awards and has won multiple Teen Choice Awards and a People’s Choice Award.

Personal life

Lovato was engaged to Max Ehrich in July 2020, but the engagement ended in September 2020. In December 2023, they announced their engagement to musician Jordan Jutes Lutes. They have two siblings: older sister Dallas Lovato and half-sister Madison De La Garza.

Lovato has been open about their struggles with bipolar disorder diagnosed in 2011, anorexia and bulimia treated in 2010, and a drug overdose in 2018. They identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns, and are a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and feminism.
