BIOGRAPHY

Kelsey Grammer — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On February 21, 1955, Kelsey Grammer was born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, to Sally Cranmer, a singer, and Frank Allen Grammer, a musician and restaurateur. He was raised in New Jersey and Florida and attended Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale. Grammer was drawn to Shakespeare and spent two years at the prestigious Juilliard School before moving to regional theater, eventually making it to Broadway in productions of Macbeth and Othello.

Grammer’s childhood was marked by tragedy: his father was murdered in 1968 in the Virgin Islands, and his younger sister Karen Elisa Grammer was raped and murdered in 1975 while finishing a shift at a Red Lobster in Colorado Springs. These events shaped his personal and professional life. He later named his daughter Spencer Karen in memory of his sister.

Career

In 1984, Grammer joined the cast of NBC’s Cheers as Dr. Frasier Crane, a role that earned him multiple Emmy nominations. After Cheers ended in 1993, he reprised the character in the spin-off Frasier, which ran for 11 seasons and earned him four Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Grammer is the first actor to receive Emmy nominations for the same character on three different series: Cheers, Frasier, and a guest appearance on Wings.

Beyond television, Grammer’s distinctive voice has been heard in animated features such as Toy Story 2 as Stinky Pete and Anastasia, and he provided the original voice for the Geico Gecko. He voiced Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons, a recurring role that earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in 2017 for Trollhunters. He also appeared in live-action films like X-Men: The Last Stand as Beast, and produced the Broadway musical The Color Purple from 2015 to 2017.

Personal life

Grammer has been married four times. He married Doreen Alderman in 1982 divorced 1990, with whom he has a daughter, Spencer born 1983. He married Leigh Anne Csuhany in 1992 divorced 1993. He married Camille Grammer in 1997 divorced 2011, with whom he has two children: Mason born 2001 via surrogate and Jude born 2004 via surrogate. He married Kayte Grammer in 2011; they have two children: Faith born 2012 and Kelsey Gabriel Elias born 2014. Grammer also has a daughter, Greer born 1992, with Barrie Buckner.

Grammer’s personal life has seen struggles: he served 30 days in jail for DUI probation violation, spent time at the Betty Ford clinic for substance abuse, and suffered a mild heart attack in 2008. He is a registered Republican and has expressed interest in running for U.S. Senate from California.

Legacy

Kelsey Grammer’s portrayal of Dr. Frasier Crane is one of television’s most enduring characters, spanning 20 years from 1984 to 2004. He tied James Arness’s record for the longest-running prime-time role. He is the only actor nominated for Emmys for the same role on three series.

Grammer received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2001 and has won six Primetime Emmys in total. His voice work on The Simpsons as Sideshow Bob introduced him to a new generation. He remains a significant figure in comedy. He is most remembered as the erudite psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane.
