Early life
On July 25, 1905, Elias Canetti was born in Russe, Bulgaria into a Sephardic Jewish family. His native language was Judaeo-Spanish, a key part of his cultural heritage. His brothers, Georges Canetti and Jacques Canetti, became notable figures — Georges as a microbiologist and Jacques as a music publisher.
At the University of Vienna, he absorbed the intellectual debates that shaped his later writing.
