Early life

During World War II, Harold Pinter was evacuated to Cornwall to avoid German bombing. He encountered anti-Semitism, which he later said ignited his path to playwriting. Born on October 10, 1930, in Hackney, London, to tailor Jack Haim Pinter and homemaker Frances Moskowitz, both Eastern European Jewish immigrants, he studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Central School of Speech and Drama, and in 1951 he toured Ireland under the stage name David Baron with Anew McMaster’s Shakespearean repertory company.

Career

Pinter’s first play, The Room, was staged at Bristol University in 1957, written in four days after a friend commissioned it. His first full-length play, The Birthday Party 1958, initially flopped but later gained critical success as a masterpiece. The Caretaker 1960 established him as a major force in English theater, followed by The Homecoming 1964, which won a Tony Award. He collaborated with director Joseph Losey on The Servant 1963, Accident 1967, and The Go-Between 1971. He wrote screenplays for The French Lieutenant’s Woman 1981 and Betrayal 1983, adapting his own play. In his later years, he turned to overtly political plays like Mountain Language and poetry, declaring his retirement from playwriting in 2005.

Personal life

Pinter married actress Vivien Merchant on September 14, 1956; they had a son, Daniel Brand. The marriage ended after Pinter’s affair with broadcaster Joan Bakewell in the early 1960s, which inspired the play Betrayal. He married historian Antonia Fraser on November 27, 1980, and they remained together until his death. Pinter was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2002 and underwent chemotherapy. He died of liver cancer on December 24, 2008, in London.
