Who was Eduardo De Filippo?

BIOGRAPHY

Eduardo De Filippo — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

A scion of a theatrical dynasty, Eduardo De Filippo was born in Naples on May 24, 1900, to Luisa De Filippo and Eduardo Scarpetta, the stage actor. By age 5, he was already on stage, playing the role of Peppiniello in his father’s comedy Miseria e Nobiltà. This early immersion in theatre set the foundation for his lifelong career.

Career

In 1932, at age 32, Eduardo De Filippo formed his own stage company with his brother Peppino and sister Titina. The trio began appearing in films starting in 1933, enjoying success in both mediums. After their breakup post-World War II, De Filippo focused on directing, having begun in 1940. In the 1950s, he turned out a string of light comedies based on his own plays. He wrote or collaborated on films with directors such as Vittorio De Sica. Notable films include The Gold of Naples 1954, Everybody Go Home! 1960, and The Shortest Day 1963.

Personal life

Eduardo De Filippo married three times: Isabella Quarantotti, Thea Prandi, and Dorothy Pennington. With Thea Prandi, he had a son, Luca De Filippo, who became an actor. His siblings Titina and Peppino were also actors, and his father Eduardo Scarpetta was a stage actor. He also had half-siblings Vincenzo Scarpetta, Eduardo Passarelli, and Pasquale De Filippo, and a stepdaughter, actress Angelica Ippolito.

Legacy

Eduardo De Filippo received the Feltrinelli Prize and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. His works, such as The Gold of Naples, continue to be studied and performed. He also served as a member of the Italian Parliament from 1981 until his death in 1984. He is remembered as a playwright, actor, and director who brought Neapolitan culture to the world stage.
