Who was Humphrey Bogart?

BIOGRAPHY

Humphrey Bogart — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

From his earliest days, Humphrey Bogart was surrounded by both creativity and adversity. His mother, Maud Humphrey, was a famed magazine illustrator and suffragette, while his father, Belmont DeForest Bogart, was a surgeon secretly addicted to opium. Bogart attended Trinity School in New York City and was later sent to Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, to prepare for medical studies at Yale. However, he was expelled from Phillips and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War I. After the war, he managed a stage company owned by family friend William A. Brady, which led to his start in acting.

His first stage performances were met with criticism; Alexander Woollcott described his acting in a 1922 play as inadequate. But Bogart persisted, eventually making his feature film debut in a short titled Broadway’s Like That 1930 co-starring Ruth Etting and Joan Blondell. Fox released him after two years of minor roles, and he did not become a star quickly.

Career

In 1936, Leslie Howard forced Warner Bros. to cast Humphrey Bogart as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest, a role Bogart had originated on Broadway. The film’s success earned Bogart a long-term contract with Warner Bros., and from 1936 to 1940 he appeared in 28 films, often playing gangsters. In 1941, he starred in two classic films: High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon, the latter becoming one of his most iconic roles as Sam Spade. The following year, Casablanca 1942 made him an international star as Rick Blaine. He continued to deliver memorable performances in The Big Sleep 1946, Key Largo 1948, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1948, the last of which he also produced through his company Santana. Bogart won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The African Queen 1951 and received nominations for Casablanca and The Caine Mutiny 1954, the latter filmed while he was already seriously ill with esophageal cancer.

Personal life

Humphrey Bogart married four times: Helen Menken in 1926, Mary Philips in 1928, Mayo Methot in 1938, and Lauren Bacall in 1945. Bogart and Bacall met on the set of To Have and Have Not 1944 and their off-screen romance developed despite Bogart’s marriage to Methot at the time. Bacall later revealed that she placed a small gold whistle in his coffin as a symbol of their relationship. He had two children with Bacall: Stephen Humphrey Bogart born 1949 and Leslie Bogart born 1952. Bogart was a heavy smoker, consuming up to 40 cigarettes a day, and his esophageal cancer diagnosis in January 1956 led to a nine-and-a-half hour surgery. He died at his Hollywood home on January 14, 1957, at age 57.

Legacy

The American Film Institute ranked Humphrey Bogart the greatest screen actor of all time. His portrayal of Rick Blaine in Casablanca 1942 is consistently listed among the most iconic characters in film history. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The African Queen 1951 and received two other nominations. His influence extended beyond acting; his group of friends, including Frank Sinatra, became known as the Rat Pack after Bogart’s wife Lauren Bacall coined the term. A postage stamp bearing his image was issued in 1997 as part of the Legends of Hollywood series. Bogart is remembered as the epitome of the tough-but-honorable antihero, and his films still draw audiences decades after his death.
