Early life
Janelle Monáe Robinson was born on December 1, 1985, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Janet Robinson, a janitor, and Michael Robinson Summers, a truck driver. Growing up, they developed a passion for science fiction, watching The Twilight Zone religiously on television. They attended F. L. Schlagle High School and later studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, as well as the Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia, the oldest African-American theater in the city.
