Who is Will Smith?

BIOGRAPHY

Will Smith — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Will Smith was born on September 25, 1968 in West Philadelphia to Caroline Bright, a school board administrator, and Willard Carroll Smith Sr., a refrigeration engineer. He grew up in the Wynnefield neighborhood with three siblings and attended Catholic elementary school Our Lady of Lourdes. His parents separated when he was 13, and he later attended Overbrook High School, where he developed his passion for rapping. Despite high SAT scores, he chose not to pursue college, instead focusing on his music career with childhood friend Jeffrey Townes as DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Career

Smith began his career as the MC of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, winning the first Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989 for Parents Just Don’t Understand. In 1990, he was cast in the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which ran for six seasons and launched his acting career. His first major film role came in the drama Six Degrees of Separation 1993, followed by the action-comedy Bad Boys 1995 opposite Martin Lawrence. The sci-fi blockbuster Independence Day 1996 made him a global star, and he followed it with Men in Black 1997, Enemy of the State 1998, and I Am Legend 2007. Smith earned Oscar nominations for Ali 2001 and The Pursuit of Happyness 2006 before finally winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for King Richard 2021.

Personal life

Smith married Sheree Zampino in 1992, and they had a son, Trey Smith, before divorcing in 1995. He married actress Jada Pinkett Smith in 1997; they have two children, Jaden Smith born 1998 and Willow Smith born 2000. Smith co-starred with Jaden in The Pursuit of Happyness and After Earth. The family resides in Los Angeles, and Smith also has a home in Stockholm, Sweden. He has been open about his financial struggles early in his career, including a $2.8 million tax debt that nearly bankrupted him in 1990.

Legacy

Will Smith is one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood history, with films grossing over $6.6 billion globally as of 2014. He is the only actor to have eight consecutive films earn over $100 million at the domestic box office. His influence extends to music as a Grammy-winning rapper who helped popularize hip-hop in mainstream culture. Smith has received numerous honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Academy Award for Best Actor. He is remembered for his charismatic performances in both comedic and dramatic roles, as well as his philanthropic efforts with the David Angell Humanitarian Award.
