John Cale.

March 9, 1942 saw the birth of John Davies Cale in Ammanford, Carmarthen, Wales, to Margaret Davies and William Arthur George Cale. He received classical training on viola and piano from a young age and attended Ammanford Grammar School before studying at Goldsmiths, University of London. His interest in experimental classical music, especially the work of John Cage, led him to study in New York in the early 1960s, where he became an apprentice of Cage and performed a relay piano piece with him.

In 1964, Cale joined the Primitives, a band put together around Lou Reed’s song The Ostrich, which began his partnership with Reed. The next year, they formed the Velvet Underground with Sterling Morrison. Their meeting with Andy Warhol in 1965 led to Warhol becoming their manager and producer, securing a contract with MGM’s Verve label and bringing Nico into the group. Cale’s classical touches on viola, bass, organ, and vibraphone gave the band a refined edge. A falling-out with Reed in 1968 led to Cale’s departure, after which he began a solo career and produced records for other artists, including Nico’s The Marble Index, the Stooges’ debut, Patti Smith’s Horses, and the Modern Lovers. He and Reed mended their friendship and collaborated on the 1989 album Songs for Drella after Warhol’s death. Cale reunited with the Velvet Underground for a 1992 tour and live album.

John Cale married fashion designer Betsey Johnson in April 1968; the wedding was delayed when Cale came down with hepatitis and required hospitalization. Photos of the wedding later appeared in Vogue magazine. They had one daughter, Eden Cale, who became an actress. The marriage ended in divorce in 1971. Cale is a native Welsh speaker.

John Cale has influenced both rock and classical music. As a producer, he shaped the sound of punk and alternative rock through his work with the Stooges, Patti Smith, and the Modern Lovers. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of the Velvet Underground. In 2010, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to music and the arts. Cale continues to perform and record, and his fusion of classical and rock elements remains a hallmark. He is remembered as the avant-garde force behind the Velvet Underground and as a producer of landmark albums for The Stooges, Patti Smith, and The Modern Lovers.
