Early life

Born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant on June 21, 1985 in New York City, Lana Del Rey was raised in Lake Placid, New York. She has English and Scottish ancestry. At age 15, she was sent to Kent School, a boarding school in Connecticut, for three years to deal with her alcohol dependence. After graduating, she took a gap year and then attended Fordham University, where she studied metaphysics, a branch of philosophy. She volunteered at homeless youth and drug and alcohol outreach programs, and helped paint and rebuild houses on an Indian reservation in the western United States.

Career

Lana Del Rey released the single Kill Kill under her given name Lizzy Grant in 2009 before reinventing herself as the pop femme fatale Lana Del Rey. The video for Video Games appeared online in August 2011, generating considerable buzz. Her EP featuring Video Games and Blue Jeans was released in fall 2011. Her debut album Born to Die was announced by Interscope for release in early 2012. She performed on Saturday Night Live in 2012, the first artist since Natalie Imbruglia in 1998 to do so before her debut album. Her musical style is known as Hollywood sadcore.

Personal life

Lana Del Rey has been open about her past struggles with alcohol dependence, which led to her being sent to Kent School at age 15. She has been a volunteer in homeless youth and drug outreach programs. She is close friends with actress Jaime King. In 2024, she married Jeremy Dufrene. She has matching tattoos with Adele and has been praised by Bruce Springsteen as one of the best American songwriters. She performed gratis at the wedding of Kim Kardashian and Ye in May 2014.
