Who was Lauren Bacall?

BIOGRAPHY

Lauren Bacall — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Her parents divorced when she was five, and she rarely saw her father afterward. Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske on September 16, 1924, in the Bronx, New York City, the only child of Natalie Weinstein-Bacal, a Romanian Jewish immigrant, and Wulf William Perski, a salesman of Polish Jewish descent. She aspired to be a dancer from infancy, taking ballet, but shifted to acting as a teenager. She attended Julia Richman High School and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, leaving after a year when scholarships were unavailable for girls. She then worked as a model and, later, as a theater usherette—George Jean Nathan named her the prettiest usher of 1942 in Esquire.

Career

At 18, Bacall’s appearance on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar caught the attention of Nancy Hawks, wife of director Howard Hawks, who gave her a screen test. Hawks cast her as Marie Browning in To Have and Have Not 1944 opposite Humphrey Bogart, where her husky voice and sultry demeanor made her an instant star. The film also sparked a real-life romance with Bogart, whom she married in 1945. She followed with The Big Sleep 1946, Dark Passage 1947, and Key Largo 1948, all with Bogart. In 1953, she starred in the comedy How to Marry a Millionaire with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable, a major hit. After Bogart’s death in 1957, Bacall returned to Broadway, winning a Tony Award for Applause in 1970 and another for Woman of the Year in 1981. She later earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for The Mirror Has Two Faces 1996 and voiced the Witch of the Waste in Howl’s Moving Castle 2004.

Personal life

Bacall married Humphrey Bogart on May 21, 1945, at Malabar Farm in Ohio. They had two children: Stephen Humphrey Bogart born 1949 and Leslie Bogart born 1952. Bacall lost her virginity to Bogart at 19, as she wrote in her autobiography. After Bogart’s death from throat cancer in 1957, she had a brief engagement to Frank Sinatra, who broke it off. In 1961, she married actor Jason Robards, with whom she had son Sam Robards born 1961; they divorced in 1969. Bacall lived in the Dakota building in New York City, where she heard the gunshot that killed John Lennon in 1980. She was close friends with Gregory Peck, whom she met at 17, and Katharine Hepburn was godmother to her son Sam.

Legacy

Lauren Bacall’s deep, husky voice—developed after Howard Hawks dismissed her for a high nasal voice—became her trademark and inspired the character Jessica Rabbit. She is one of the few actresses to have a vocal disorder named after her: Bogart-Bacall syndrome. Bacall received an Academy Honorary Award in 2009 for her contributions to cinema. Empire magazine ranked her #11 on their list of the 100 Greatest Movie Stars and #6 on their list of the 100 Sexiest Stars. Her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1724 Vine Street was placed in 1960. Madonna’s 1990 song Vogue referenced her as a surviving legend. Bacall’s presence in classics like The Big Sleep and her partnership with Humphrey Bogart remain part of Hollywood history.
