Who was Lola Flores?

BIOGRAPHY

Lola Flores — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born in 1923 in Jerez de la Frontera, Lola Flores grew up immersed in Andalusian flamenco traditions. By her teens, she was already a noted dancer and singer, making her film debut in 1939 as a gypsy character.

Career

Lola Flores debuted on film in 1939 as a gypsy, then built her career on live flamenco shows. In the 1940s, she partnered with singer Manolo Caracol and they toured Andalusia until 1951. She starred in the 1948 film Embrujo. Later roles included El Taxi De Los Conflictos 1969 and Juncal 1989. Her marriage to guitarist Antonio González in 1958 did not halt her career; she continued acting and performing.

Personal life

Lola Flores married guitarist Antonio González, known as El Pescaílla, in 1958 at dawn in the Basilica del Escorial to avoid reprisals from his first wife. The couple had three children: Lolita, Antonio, and Rosario Flores, all performers. Her son Antonio died from depression and substance abuse after her death. Lola also had a sister, Carmen Flores, who sang.

Legacy

Lola Flores received the Gold Medal of Work Merit and was named Dearest Son of Andalusia and Dearest Son of Cádiz province. She inspired flamenco artists, and her children Lolita, Antonio, and Rosario carry on her work. Archive footage of her appears in the 2025 documentary Flores Para Antonio. Her passionate flamenco artistry and nickname La Faraona endure.
