Who is Ariana Grande?

BIOGRAPHY

Ariana Grande — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At age 15, Ariana Grande starred in the Broadway musical 13 in 2008, where she met Elizabeth Gillies, her longtime friend and later co-star on Victorious. She was born Ariana Grande Butera on June 26, 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida, to Joan Grande, a CEO, and Edward Butera, a graphic designer. Both of her parents are of Italian descent, with roots in Sicily, Abruzzo, and Basilicata. She attended Pine Crest School and North Broward Preparatory School.

Career

Ariana Grande’s music career kicked off in 2011 with the soundtrack for Victorious. Her debut studio album Yours Truly topped the Billboard 200 in 2013. The lead single The Way debuted in the top 10, and critics compared her to Mariah Carey. Her second album, My Everything 2014, also hit number one, and its singles kept her in the top 10 for 34 consecutive weeks. In 2016, Dangerous Woman debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. Its title track made her the first artist to have the lead singles from her first three albums debut in the top 10.

During her Dangerous Woman Tour in 2017, a terrorist attack at her Manchester Arena concert killed 22 people. Grande canceled the tour temporarily and organized the OneLoveManchester benefit concert on June 4, 2017, raising over £2 million. She returned to touring on June 7, 2017. In 2018, she released Sweetener, which won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. Her 2019 album Thank U, Next produced the singles 7 Rings, Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored, and Thank U, Next. These singles simultaneously held the top three spots on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist to do so since The Beatles in 1964.

Personal life

On May 15, 2021, Ariana Grande married Dalton Gomez in a small ceremony at their Montecito home. She was previously engaged to Pete Davidson from June to October 2018 and dated Mac Miller from August 2016 to April 2018. She has a half-brother, Frankie Grande, and owns several dogs including Toulouse, Ophelia, and Coco. A vegan, she advocates for animal rights and urged fans to stop supporting SeaWorld after watching Blackfish. Grande has over 60 tattoos and wears a ponytail extension due to hair damage from years of dyeing for her role on Victorious.

Legacy

Ariana Grande’s four-octave coloratura soprano and chart dominance mark her impact on pop music. She became the first artist since The Beatles to hold the top three Billboard Hot 100 spots simultaneously with 7 Rings, Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored, and Thank U, Next. In 2016, Time named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. After the Manchester bombing, Manchester made her an honorary citizen for her response and the OneLoveManchester concert. Her powerful voice, genre-defining pop hits, and resilience in the face of tragedy define her legacy.
