Early life

Mammootty was born on September 6, 1951 in Chandiroor, Travancore, India to Ismail, an agriculturist, and Fatima, a homemaker. He had two younger brothers and three sisters. After attending St. Joseph’s Thevara and Maharaja’s College, he studied law at Government Law College, Kozhikode. During his days at Maharajah’s College, he got his first role as an extra in Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971.

Career

Mammootty’s breakthrough came with the 1991 Tamil film Thalapathi, where he played Devaraj Deva. He won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for 1993’s Vidheyan. A second National Award came for Kathapurushan 1994 and a third for Perumazhakkalam 2004. In 2005, he appeared as himself in the TV series Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. He continued to star in major Malayalam films like Bheeshma Parvam 2022 and the horror thriller Bramayugam 2024. In 2025, he voiced Moothon in the upcoming Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra. He is the only actor to headline films in six languages: Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and English.

Personal life

Mammootty married Sulfaath in 1980. They have two children: son Dulquer Salmaan, also a successful actor, and daughter Surmi. He was a practicing lawyer before acting. An autobiography, Chamayangalillathe, was serialized in Malayala Manorama weekly in 1992. He is also a patron of the Pain and Palliative Care Society.

Legacy

Three National Film Awards and a Padma Shri define Mammootty’s legacy. He inspired younger actors like his son Dulquer Salmaan. His ability to lead films in six languages set a record. Two honorary doctorates have been conferred on him, and he remains a cultural icon in Kerala. Anthony Bourdain featured him in the No Reservations episode on Kerala.
