BIOGRAPHY

Maurice Gibb — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Maurice Gibb entered the world at 3:50 am on December 22, 1949, the identical twin of Robin Gibb. He was the third of five children; older brother Barry and younger brother Andy also became musicians. His father Hugh Gibb was a bandleader. The family later moved to Australia. From that musical household, Maurice absorbed the influences that shaped his career.

Career

Maurice Gibb’s career took off as a Bee Gees member after the group’s 1977 soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever became a global hit. He acted in films including Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 1978 and The Supernaturals 1986. In the 1990s, he owned Commander Mo’s paintball shop in Miami. He also guest-starred on TV shows such as The Midnight Special and Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The soundtrack achieved global success.

Personal life

Maurice Gibb married singer Lulu in 1969; divorce came four years later in 1973. In 1975, he married Yvonne Spenceley, who remained his wife until his death. He had two children: son Adam born 1976 and daughter Samantha born 1980. He died on January 12, 2003, which coincided with his elder sister Leslie’s 58th birthday. An avid fan of the sitcom Father Ted, he was buried with its DVD box set.

Legacy

He earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 as a Bee Gees member. He received a CBE in 2001. The Bee Gees also earned a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6845 Hollywood Boulevard. His work on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack has influenced artists including Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk. Fans remember him as the quiet backbone of the Bee Gees.
