Early life

Moon Jae in’s activism against the Yushin dictatorship began at Kyung Hee University, where he studied law. That protest blocked him from becoming a judge or prosecutor, even though he graduated second in his class from the Judicial Research and Training Institute. He was born on January 24, 1953, on Geoje Island, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, to Kang Han ok and Moon Yong hyung. He attended Namhang Elementary School, Gyeongnam Middle School, and Kyungnam High School before university.

Career

In 1982, Moon Jae in and Roh Moo-hyun opened a human rights law office. In 1988 he co-founded the newspaper The Hankyoreh. He served as Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs, Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Society, and Chief Presidential Secretary from 2003 to 2008 under President Roh Moo-hyun. On May 10, 2017, he became President of South Korea. He appeared as himself in the documentaries Our President 2017 and Explained 2018.

Personal life

Moon Jae in married Kim Jung Sook in March 1981. They have two children: Moon Joon Yong and Moon Da hye. Kim Jung Sook was a vocalist at Kyung Hee University. The family lives at the Blue House with at least four dogs and a cat.

Legacy

Moon Jae in received the Time 100, Global Citizen Awards, and Decoration for Exceptional Merits. He served in the South Korean special forces before becoming a human rights lawyer. He co-founded The Hankyoreh newspaper in 1988 and a human rights law firm with Roh Moo-hyun in 1982. He became President of South Korea in 2017.
