Early life

Helen Porter Mitchell was born on 19 May 1861 in Richmond, Victoria, Australia, to Isabella Ann Dow and David Mitchell. She attended Presbyterian Ladies’ College and Westonbirt School before studying voice in Paris under teacher Mathilde Marchesi.

Career

Melba made her London debut at Covent Garden in 1888 as Lucia di Lammermoor, quickly establishing herself as a leading soprano there. She performed worldwide, including at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. For her patriotic services during World War I, she received the Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire on 15 March 1918, and the Dame Grand Cross on 3 June 1927.

Personal life

She married Charles Frederick Nisbett Armstrong on 22 December 1882, and their only child, George Nesbitt Armstrong, was born soon after. The marriage ended in divorce around 1900 following her romance with the Duc de Montpensier. She died on 23 February 1931 in Darlinghurst, Sydney from septicaemia.

Legacy

Melba’s legacy continues through culinary creations named after her: Peach Melba, Melba toast, and Melba sauce. She is buried at Lilydale General Cemetery in Victoria. Her great-grandson is Samuel Vestey. Australia remembers her as its first opera star to achieve international fame.
