Who was Hugh Hefner?

BIOGRAPHY

Hugh Hefner — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Hugh Hefner was born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, to Grace Caroline Swanson and Glenn Lucius Hefner, who were from Phelps County, Nebraska. Raised in the Montclare neighborhood of Chicago with rigid Methodist values, his most prized childhood possession was a blanket covered with little bunnies, which later inspired the name of his magazine. He had an IQ of 152 in high school but was described as an unenthusiastic student. After graduating from Steinmetz High School in 1944, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later attended the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, where he studied and began developing an interest in publishing.

Career

Hefner started his career working for Esquire magazine, but left after being denied a $5-a-week raise. In 1953, he used $8,000 from investors—including his mother and friends—to launch Playboy magazine. The first issue featured Marilyn Monroe as the centerfold and sold out. For more than 50 years, Hefner personally interviewed every Playmate of the Month. In 1963, he was arrested for publishing indecent photos of Jayne Mansfield. Playboy became a cultural phenomenon, known for its interviews, fiction, and photography. Hefner expanded into television with Playboy’s Penthouse and Playboy After Dark. He moved the headquarters to Los Angeles in 1971, establishing the Playboy Mansion. He appeared in films such as the 1987 film Beverly Hills Cop II, the 2009 film Miss March, and the 2011 film Hop, as well as voicing himself on TV shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy. In 1988, he turned over the business to his daughter Christie Hefner.

Personal life

Hefner was married three times: to Mildred Williams from 1949 to 1959, to Kimberley Conrad from 1989 to 2010, and to Crystal Harris from 2012 until his death. He also lived with Barbi Benton from 1969 to 1976. A lifelong advocate for gay rights, he fought against censorship. He was adamantly against drug use in his homes. His will included a sobriety clause for beneficiaries: they must remain clean and sober to receive trust funds.

Legacy

Hefner’s legacy is tied to the sexual revolution and the mainstreaming of adult entertainment. He created a media brand that became synonymous with luxury and lifestyle. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1980. A species of marsh rabbit, the Lower Keys marsh rabbit, was named Sylvilagus palustris hefneri in his honor. He purchased the burial plot next to Marilyn Monroe in 1992. He is remembered as a publishing magnate who challenged social norms and championed free speech, though his impact remains controversial. He died on September 27, 2017, at his home in Holmby Hills, and was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park.
