Early life

Robbie Coltrane was born Anthony Robert McMillan on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. His mother, Jean Ross Howie, was a teacher and pianist; his father, Ian Baxter McMillan, was a general surgeon who also worked for police pathology. Young Robbie developed a passion for art, music, films, and cars, and read his father’s medical and crime books. At age 12, he made his acting debut at Glenalmond College, delivering rants from Henry V, inspired by Marlon Brando and Orson Welles. He studied drawing, painting, and film at the Glasgow School of Art, later attending the University of Edinburgh. In 1973, he adopted the stage name Coltrane out of his love for jazz and began performing stand-up comedy at nightclubs and the Edinburgh Festival.

Coltrane made his television debut in 1980 as a border guard in BBC’s The Lost Tribe and his film debut as a limousine driver in Death Watch. His first leading role came in 1981 as Detective Fritz Langley in Subway Riders. He gained visibility through appearances in The Comic Strip series and films like The Supergrass 1985 and The Pope Must Diet 1991. His career breakthrough came in 1993 when he took the lead role of Dr. Eddie Fitz Fitzgerald, a forensic psychologist, in the acclaimed ITV series Cracker, earning him a BAFTA nomination. In 1995, he played Valentin Zukovsky in the James Bond film GoldenEye and reprised the role in The World Is Not Enough 1999. By far his most iconic role came when J.K. The couple separated in 2003. Coltrane struggled with alcohol and obesity, once drinking a bottle of whisky a day. In 1986, he traveled to a Mexican clinic for obesity treatment. Outside acting, he enjoyed rebuilding and collecting vintage cars, owning four old American cars, and pursued painting, writing children’s books, and scripting films. He resided in a converted farmhouse in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
